Breaking yourself back into fitness
If you've been hibernating all winter (or, let's face it, all year whilst the gym has been closed), the thought of figuring out how to start working out again can seem a bit daunting. When you're not in the habit of working out, you lose progress—don't be deterred from sweating it out. Why not set yourself a personal challenge/goal to achieve to keep you motivated.
We caught up with Mike our Leisure Club Manager and here are his top tips for getting back into fitness...
1. Planning
Understand that you're probably not going to be as fit as you were, and that's OK. Start slowly and build yourself back up to your previous fitness level gradually, your body does retain muscle memory. Even if it's just 10 minutes a day; the goal is just to get moving more.
2. Healthy Choices
DO NOT crash diet, you will need to be using food as fuel to perform well, if like many, you overindulged a little during lockdown perhaps limit your calorie intake slightly or steer clear of sugary treats and processed foods.
3. Drink Plenty of Water
Be sure to be drinking plenty of water. If you don’t stay hydrated, your physical performance can suffer.
This is particularly important during intense exercise or high heat.
4. Make It a Social Outing
5. Enjoy
Most importantly over everything else be sure to have fun and enjoy yourself, it will be easier to stick to exercise regimen and be able to maintain it as a lifestyle choice rather than a fad if you enjoy it.
So don't forget to smile and have fun!
