The benefits of the great outdoors

    Posted: Tuesday 12th January

    Lockdown Exercise

Why it is more important than ever

In the restrictive times we find ourselves in at the moment, visiting country parks and forests is a great way to unwind, reconnect with nature and relax. They generally include buckets of green space which, of course, means we can all stick to and adhere to social distancing measures. They also provide an outdoor playground for you to explore and grab your daily dose of fresh air.

There are many other benefits visiting your local park or forest and we've included our top three. Make sure it's local mind. Familiarise yourself with the rules so you don't get yourselves in hot bother.

You can continue to exercise alone, with one other person or with your household or support bubble. This should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area.

    You should maintain social distancing.

    Enjoy responsibly!

    1. TIME OUT

While our technology and devices can be wonderful tools to help us connect with a world of knowledge and each other, we need to be aware of the ways technology might be keeping us from exploring nature and the outside world.

A visit to your local park, open space or forest provides you with quality time to disconnect from technology and the stresses of home life.

You are more likely to think of creative and innovative ideas whilst taking a stroll in the great outdoors.

    2. HEALTH

Regular exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Study after study shows the benefits it can have. Not only does regular exercise help you manage your weight and reduce your risk of developing diseases, it can help prevent and treat mental health problems.

It can boost your wellbeing and mood, and is a great way to unwind from the stresses of life. Outdoor exercise is so beneficial because it gives you a lot of variety, sunshine and stress relief, helping you feel great.

    3. WELLBEING

Escaping to the great outdoors keeps the body strong and healthy and can improve mental health by decreasing symptoms of depression, anxiety, pain and loneliness. It's also great exercise for your mind. When you exercise outdoors, your mind is aware of the changing terrain. Whether you use the hills, the sand on a beach, or a winding path, your mind has to focus differently than it would on a flat surface.

Getting outdoors can reduce fatigue by boosting vitamin D levels, helping you to feel more alert and refreshed.
